Reducing the environmental impact of a product works best when considered from the start. That means looking at how the product is designed and built, how it will be packed, transported, used, and what happens to it after the end of its first life.
Sustainable design
We design our products to ensure they have a longer life and perform for years, with longer life replacement parts and ultra-robust welded metal frames.
We are constantly looking for ways to make our devices more efficient. That’s why Buyers Lab Inc. (BLI) ranked our A4 devices number one for energy efficiency with the BLI Most Energy Efficient Laser A4 Brand Award 2023 – 2025, and overall, our energy saving technologies are expected to achieve a CO2 reduction of 3.2 million tons.
Our focus on quality helps reduce service intervals, in some cases more than halving the average number of service calls required.
Responsible manufacturing
When we manufacture our devices, we look to conserve resources – whether that’s using less raw materials, using recycled materials, or saving energy.
Through that, we’ve achieved a reduction of 44.4% in the lifecycle CO2 emissions of our products from 2008 to 2023.
Sound logistics
We strive to reduce the impact of transporting our products, through efficient logistics, smaller sized devices, and more recyclable packaging.
For example, for the imageRUNNER DX C5860i, we have achieved a weight reduction of 25%, making it more efficient to transport.
We aim to use as much paper and cardboard in our packaging from sustainable or recycled sources as possible, and we minimise plastic usage where we can.
Smart services
From installation and maintenance to support and resolution, we aim to provide as many of our services remotely as possible.
Remote Canon engineers can resolve issues through onscreen annotation and live video streaming, avoiding emissions from unnecessary travel.
Our intelligent, remote consumables management systems automatically order replacement toner and combines shipments as needed.
Reuse and recycle
We embrace the circular economy, with a continuously enhanced range of remanufactured and refurbished products. Our imageRUNNER ADVANCE ES series are now built with at least 90% reused parts. Overall, since 2008, we’ve reused more than 37,155 tons of products and parts.
We also collect used toner cartridges in 24 countries, with a cumulative volume of 464,000 tons as of the end of 2023, achieving a reduction of 331,000 tons in resource use.

For 2023, Canon has been awarded an A score for climate change by CDP, the third time we have been included on their highest-ranking A list and placing us in the top 2% of companies assessed in this category. The CDP is an international environmental non-profit organisation which evaluates major companies and organisations worldwide on their efforts to tackle environmental issues.

BLI Most Energy Efficient Laser A4 Brand Award 2023 – 2025
Market research institution Buyers Laboratory Inc. found that our laser A4 devices were significantly ahead of the market in terms of energy efficiency. The 12 Canon laser A4 devices tested used 37% less energy than the next two competitors combined, leading to the Most Energy Efficient Laser A4 Brand Award 2023 – 2025.

In 2023, Canon Inc. and Group companies operating in 40 countries and regions (in total, 120 companies/553 operational sites) had gained ISO 14001 certification.
