The Canon imagePRESS V1000, which was launched in April 2022 as the newest addition to the imagePRESS portfolio, has now achieved Fogra PSD (Process Standard Digital) certification. The V1000 received the highest possible Print Quality Class, grade ‘A’, in every paper and controller combination. This certification means that the entire imagePRESS portfolio is now officially Fogra compliant, with the C910 Series achieving the same ‘A’ standard in December 2020 and the C10010VP joining the ranks in March 2021.

All imagePRESS models were validated using two different media types, Silk 170gsm and a standard offset coated paper, Sappi Magno Plus Gloss 115gsm, with two alternative controllers (PRISMAsync and EFI). Print-runs of a minimum of 500 copies were tested to simulate colour consistency in real production scenarios. The international Fogra PSD standard uses a ‘media relative’ method, meaning that certification is completed comparing various types of paper at different standards. This approach takes into account the whiteness of contemporary printing stocks, which are frequently enhanced with optical brightening agents.
What is Fogra PSD?
FOGRA is a German-based Research Institute for the graphics industry, renowned across EMEA. They are very actively involved in maintaining several ISO standards (ISO TC 130) concerning colour management and printing. Based on ISO standards, they developed a system of certifications for print providers, proofing systems and proof providers known as FOGRAcert. The Process Standard Digital (PSD) was developed by Fogra, which is the description of an industrially orientated and standardized procedure for the creation of digital print products. Using the PSD certificate, service providers can evidence their quality attainment and the overall understanding of the output processes.
Why is it important?
If you are a print service provider active in small or large format digital printing, you should care about the Process Standard Digital. It assists print buyers in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of digital printing processes from various vendors and provides objective criteria to make informed decisions (rather than assumptions on the capabilities of digital print systems) - helping to avoid unrealistic demands.
PSD has three main objectives:
1. Output process control – achieving predictable and repeatable print output
2. Colour fidelity
3. PDF/X compliant workflow
Value for print service providers: Successful implementation of the PSD can provide commercial printers with the benefits of improved cost, quality and time performance, with better sustainability and reduced waste. Fogra is perceived as industry-standard and for a print provider is synonymous with quality and reliability.
Value for in-house/marketing departments: For those ordering print (i.e. marketing teams) Fogra helps inform what can be produced on particular digital print devices. By sourcing print providers whose production systems are Fogra certified, this offers a high level of quality assurance. For print production facilities which are in-house, it provides evidence of capability to meet quality expectations and deliver consistent results, which is especially important for colour critical documents such as pitch books and promotional material
