Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about your Canon home printer? Our FAQs cover everything from different forms of printing tech to maintenance, ink cartridges and the best types of paper for each job, providing the knowledge you need to print with confidence.
  • If you want a versatile home printer for both documents and photos, inkjet technology is the best fit – it's able to print on a variety of media types including card, glossy and matte photo paper, windowed envelopes and more, producing both high-quality photos and clear documents. Laser printers, meanwhile, are ideal for crisp, smudge-free documents. For photos, our portable SELPHY dye-sublimation printers deliver richly coloured and durable lab-quality shots using specially coated paper. Finally, our tiny Zoemini printers heat portions of micro crystal-embedded paper to produce images without the need for ink at all.

  • Canon often uses hybrid ink systems in its small home printers, combining pigment-based black ink with dye-based coloured inks. This allows our inkjet printers to produce both crisp, rich black text for documents and vibrant colour rendition for photo printing – a versatile approach ideal for do-it-all home printing.

  • For documents, we suggest good quality plain paper or card. For photos, however, there's more choice. Canon offers glossy, lustre and matte photo papers; the former two types work particularly well with dye-based inks, which are fully absorbed and sealed within the paper's protective top layer. Matte photo paper is ideal for scrapbooking or greetings cards – we even offer a version that comes with a centre crease and envelopes.

  • In most cases, you simply open the cover of your printer, remove the used cartridge and slot a new one into place. You'll know when a replacement is needed via a prompt from your computer's printer driver, your Canon PRINT app or your printer's own screen.

Canon offers several ink systems, designed to suit different needs. For the ultimate simplicity and convenience, FINE cartridges combine pigment black and dye-based colour ink in a single cartridge with a built-in print head. For greater flexibility, there are single ink cartridges, allowing you to change only the colour you need. For high-volume printing, our MegaTank printers support easy-to-use individual ink bottles which, thanks to their unique key nozzles, can't be inserted into the wrong tank.

  • It all depends on what you're printing. If you mainly print documents, your ink cartridges will last a lot longer than if you're printing rich colour photos. If you're anticipating high-volume printing, consider a MegaTank home printer. These use refillable ink tanks rather than cartridges, and can deliver many thousands of prints before needing a refill.

To make things simpler, consider signing up for our Auto-Ink Delivery service, which detects when your printer's ink supply is running low and automatically sends a refill. Alternatively PIXMA Print Plan (subject to availability in your region) is a subscription-based service that sends refills based on your monthly usage, offering discounts of up to 50% on your cost per-page.

  • IPM (images per minute) is the industry standard method of measuring home printer speed, based on the output of standard ISO test pages that include a mix of text, charts and images, printed at a fixed resolution. We use it because it gives a precise indication of how fast a printer is in real-world use.

  • Many Canon printers for home use come with Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to print from anywhere around your home using a Wi-Fi-connected mobile device or computer – no cable required. You can do this using the Canon PRINT or Easy-PhotoPrint Editor apps, or use a direct wireless connection between the printer and your device.

Some Canon home printers also feature Cloud Link integration, allowing users to print from any location as long as both their device and the printer are connected to the internet, and to print directly from or scan directly to cloud services like Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox.
