Revolutionising videography. Again.

At Canon we’re proud of the part we’ve played in transforming filmmaking, with products like our EOS 5D series of DSLRs and Cinema EOS cameras and lenses. The EOS R5 and EOS R5 C continue this legacy, with ground-breaking video performance that redefines what hybrid shooters and filmmakers should expect from a small camera.

8K RAW has arrived

The EOS R5 can capture stunning 8K DCI RAW video internally to a CFexpress card, using the whole width of its full-frame sensor for a truly cinematic look. Focus tracking is also available, for footage that looks so good you’d think it was shot on a Hollywood budget.

As well as delivering life-like image quality, 8K resolution allows editors to crop-in on footage and still output a 4K final cut.

There are plenty of options for shooting in 8K on the EOS R5:
• 12-bit RAW,
• 10 bit ProRes RAW via Atomos Ninja V+
• 10-bit 4:2:2 MP4/H.265
• 8-bit 4:2:0 MP4/H.265,

With a choice of DCI or UHD aspect ratios, ALL-I or IPB compression methods and Canon Log, Canon Log 3 or HDR PQ options. Frame rates of 23.98p, 24p, 25p or 29.97p are available, helping you achieve the look and feel you want. 8K can even be recorded to high speed SD (v90) cards when using IPB compression.

8K RAW provides the highest level of image quality and flexibility: capture four times as much resolution as 4K, and change parameters such as white balance after footage has been shot, using Canon Cinema RAW Development software or your favourite non-linear editing application.* 8K RAW is available in a standard or compressed for small video files still with RAW flexibility.

You can also extract still frames from 8K footage, as individual 35-megapixel JPEG files (or HEIF files if footage is recorded with HDR PQ), ideal for situations where you might need to supply video footage and still photos of the same event.

*Compatibility and availability vary for each software manufacturer

4K performance like never before, up to 120 fps

Alongside its ground-breaking 8K capabilities, the EOS R5 enables videographers to capture 4K DCI (full frame) and 4K UHD at frame rates up to 120p (119.88fps) with 4:2:2/10-bit quality, enabling silky smooth slow-motion with stunning high resolution. At frame rates up to 59.94fps, there is a choice between using the full width of the camera’s sensor or a 1.6x crop, which is similar in size to Super 35mm.

For those needing the very highest 4K quality, the EOS R5’s 4K HQ mode reproduces stunning detail at frame rates up to 30p by oversampling 8K footage. The results need to be seen to be believed.

The myriad options for resolution, frame rate etc offered by the EOS R5 can be accessed from a redesigned movie mode menu, which makes it easy to find the combination of settings you’re looking for.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Our updated Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system allows smooth, accurate continuous focusing in all recording modes and features Face and Eye detection, making it ideal for documentaries and ‘run-and-gun’ style filming. It can also recognise cats, dogs and birds and track them around the frame. Pull-focus effects, that shift your audience’s attention from one place to another, are easy to create – simply tap the camera’s touch screen and the EOS R5 will smoothly refocus at a speed specified by you.

When you’re focusing manually, the EOS R5 offers a number of tools to help you nail critical sharpness accurately. Focus peaking highlights the edges of in-focus objects with a colour of your choosing, while Dual Pixel Focus Guide uses a graphical indicator to display whether the subject is front/back focused and turns green when correct focus is achieved.

Image stabilisation

The same Intelligent Image Stabilisation system that protects still photos from camera shake also operates when the EOS R5 is capturing video, smoothing out unintentional camera movements. When combined with the electronic Movie Digital IS system,* which adds another level of performance, the results are superb, with footage that looks like it was shot using a gimbal or dolly.

8K time lapse

Just as 8K resolution reveals intricate detail and clarity, so time-lapse photography can uncover the minutiae of movement happening on a completely different timescale. Put the two together and you have a visual spectacular – a feast for the eyes.

The EOS R5 makes it easier than ever to capture such high-resolution time-lapses, which can also be shot in 4K, with the movie being created in camera. The time between each frame can be specified, and it’s also possible to determine if exposure is locked at the start of the sequence or re-metered for every shot.

Intuitive to use, so feel closer to your subject

External recorders can be used with the EOS R5, thanks to its clean HDMI output at 4K/60p. In fact, footage can be simultaneously recorded internally and externally for back up and peace-of-mind. When used with an Atomos Ninja V+ external recorder, it’s now possible to record 10 bit ProRes RAW at 8k 30p, or 12bit 5K 60p ProRes RAW from a 1.6x crop. When used with a Atomos Ninja V or Atomos Shogun 7 recorder, 5K 30p ProRes RAW can be recorded externally using a 1.6x crop.

Cinema EOS zoom lenses with servo motors are now supported by the EOS R5. Control the zoom at the touch of a button on the camera, great for documentary or natural-history projects when your eye has to stay glued to the subject.

The EOS R5 is designed to feel instinctive and natural when you’re filming, so you can concentrate on your subject and your creative vision. A Vari-angle screen pivots away from the camera body and rotates through 270˚, making it comfortable to shoot from different angles. Overexposure can be highlighted with striped ‘zebra’ markers that warn when areas that are too bright.

Shooting Times

The EOS R5 offers class leading autofocus along with high resolution and high frame rate video recording options using the maximum width of the full frame sensor at high bit rates. Inevitably this combination of features will generate some significant heat which in turn will limit recording time. With Firmware V1.60 and later the “Auto power off temperature” function set to [High] enables longer recording times, but when using this setting the exterior of the camera will become very hot.
The approximate shooting times for the available resolutions and frame rates in 23°C / 73°F environments from a cold start are detailed below.

8K 30P
- Full Sensor Width RAW external recorder: Unlimited
Auto power off temperature - Standard
- Full Sensor Width: 20 minutes

*2 Recording is limited to 29 minutes 59 seconds. Indicates the time when recording can be resumed immediately.

Cautions
* The above figures are based on Canon testing conditions when using CFexpress cards and SD memory cards conforming to Canon testing standards.
* When the ambient temperature is higher than +23°C/73°F, the available recording time will be shorter.
* When using the viewfinder (EVF), the maximum available recording time will be shorter than when using the camera’s screen
* Compared to using the battery, the maximum available recording time will be shorter when the camera is powered by USB.
* Depending on the movie recording quality and capacity of memory card used, the card may become full before available continuous recording time.
* When using [Auto pwr off temp.] to [High] and recording movies, the card may become very hot. Please, be careful when removing memory card.

If the camera reaches the temperature limit it is recommended to turn the camera off in order to allow the heat dissipate.
Approximate recovery times for a 23°C / 73°F environment are indicated below but are affected by various factors such as ambient temperature, continued camera operation and the selected shooting resolution. The time until full record time is available will vary with ambient temperature.

8K 30P
- 10 minute cooldown gives approx. 3 minutes of recording time
- 20 minute cooldown gives approx. 8 minutes of recording time

4K 60P
- 10 minute cooldown gives approx. 10 minutes of recording time

For hybrid shooters who prioritise filmmaking, we developed the EOS R5 C. While using the same form factor as the EOS R5, the EOS R5 C adds even more codecs and an extended shooting time when working with 8K video. Find out which camera suits you best with our comparison guide.
