How to Read a Lens Name

How to Read a Lens Name

There are four main elements: lens mount, focal length, aperture and any specific technologies used in the lens.

1. Lens mount

A lens mount is an interface between a camera body and a lens with both RF & RF-S lenses being designed for Full Frame & APS-C EOS R mirrorless cameras respectively.

2. Focal length

Measures the range of a lens showing its shortest and longest focal length. A lower number is a wider angle and a larger number a narrower angle of view.

3. Aperture

Expressed as f-numbers and is the part of the lens which controls the amount of light that goes to the camera sensor – the smaller the number, more light can get to the sensor and produces a shallower depth-of-field.

4. Lens technologies

Are specific features that add to the optical quality and capability of the lens e.g. Image Stabilisation (IS) helps to reduce camera shake and produce sharper images. Focusing technologies such as USM (Ultrasonic Motor), STM (Stepping Motor) and fast, smooth quiet focussing and MACRO.
