All photographers and videographers experience some form of camera shake or movement. However, whether you're trying to take a professional-looking still photograph or create video content for social media, every great shot begins with a solid base, and that means finding ways to reduce the impact of handshakes. What is image stabilization?

What is IBIS (in-body image stabilization)?

IBIS accomplishes its goal by physically shifting the camera's image sensor based upon movement detected during shooting. Using gyroscopic sensors to measure movement along three axes (pitch, yaw, and roll), if movement is detected, IBIS shifts the sensor in the opposite direction of the movement to stabilize the image. What is lens IS (lens image stabilization)?

Lens embeds the stabilization functionality within each individual lens instead of relying on the camera body. Within the lens, movable optical components adjust in response to detected movement, causing the image projected onto the sensor to remain stable despite camera movement. A lens provides significant benefit in correcting pitch and yaw movements associated with handheld shooting, particularly with longer focal-length lenses, as these cause greater distortion due to increased magnification. While a lens stabilizes the image generated by an individual lens, IBIS stabilizes the sensor itself, allowing IBIS to function regardless of the lens being used. Both systems provide similar levels of performance for photography applications; however, a lens typically performs best for telephoto applications requiring focus on focal length.
