Four new lenses join Canon L-series lens range

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM
The newly-announced EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM continues the quality which the range has become renowned for, designed to be durable and easy to use.

Four new lenses have been added to the premium Canon L-series lens range, including a unique telephoto portrait lens. Canon’s L-series lenses, identified by their distinctive red ring, are synonymous with quality, and used by leading photographers worldwide.

Joining Canon’s impressive line-up is the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L MACRO, the TS-E 90mm f/2.8L MACRO and the TS-E 135mm f/4L MACRO. These premium lenses have been designed to be durable, easy to use and to offer increased scope for photographic experimentation.

The perfect portrait

Offering beautiful perspective and flattering skin tones, the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is a unique telephoto lens. Its 85mm focal length is popular as a portrait lens for complementing faces with a natural sense of distance, a lack of distortion and an ability to crisply separate the subject from the background. Also featuring a fast f/1.4 aperture and IS functionality, the multi-functional 85mm f/1.4 suits all types of photography.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM
The EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM pictured here will be joined by the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L MACRO, the TS-E 90mm f/2.8L MACRO and the TS-E 135mm f/4L MACRO as new additions to the range.

The lens features a new 14-element, 10-group lens design and uses the latest high-precision elements to correct chromatic aberration and deliver the optical performance required by the latest high-resolution sensors. An ultra-low refractive index layer on the lens, known as Air Sphere Coating technology, removes image flare and ghosting, while 4-stop image stabilisation reduces the effects of camera shake. A high-speed ring type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) driven auto focus works with the lens CPU and the camera’s autofocus algorithms to provide fast and silent AF, so it suits discreet shooting at events and is ideal for video recording too.

Designed for durability, the 85mm f/1.4 is ready to be worked hard in all conditions, while its high specifications remain housed in a small and light body. This versatile telephoto lens is likely to find its place in wedding, event, studio, press and outdoor photography. A competitive edge also comes with the lens’ full compatibility with EOS AF system, including Dual Pixel CMOS AF. It also communicates distance and focusing information to the camera for accurate flash exposure settings, ensuring the most flattering of portraits.

Listening to photographers

Responding to calls from customers to extend the range of tilt and shift lenses to longer focal lengths, Canon has also announced three further lenses. The TS-E 50mm f/2.8L MACRO, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L MACRO and TS-E 135mm f/4L MACRO combine cutting-edge L-series optical design and precision with features to support creative photography, such as specialist Tilt, Shift and Rotational movements and the minimum focusing distance optimised for macro photography.

The TS-E 50mm, with its precisely controllable depth-of-field, is suited for capturing images across landscapes and architecture, as well as in the studio. The TS-E 90mm and TS-E 135mm are ideal for use in portraiture, product and macro photography in the studio, thanks to their incredible sharpness.
