Canon, in collaboration with Makerere University, recently hosted a four-day immersive training program designed to equip aspiring journalists, content creators, and filmmakers with the practical skills needed to thrive in today’s fast-evolving media landscape.

The initiative brought together students, media professionals, and industry experts in a dynamic learning environment that combined technical mastery, hands-on practice, and creative exploration. At its core, the program reinforced a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of visual storytellers capable of producing impactful, meaningful narratives.

The opening programme started with a media professionals workshops seeing participants engage in photo and video workshops, featuring live demonstrations and expert-led discussions on Canon’s imaging ecosystem. The session demonstrated how advanced imaging technology continues to transform modern journalism and visual communication.

In the afternoon, students of Makerere University were introduced to Canon camera innovation through a hands-on session. Participants explored advanced camera features, engaged directly with trainers, and tested equipment in real-time bridging the gap between theory and practical application.

The second day of the week saw the start of a journalist workshop which focused on strengthening the fundamentals of storytelling. Participants were introduced to core principles of visual storytelling, ethical journalism, and professional reporting standards key pillars in today’s media industry.

Parelle to this, the Canon basic filmmaking workshop also began in earnest, covering foundational concepts including camera systems, the differences between DSLR and mirrorless technology, and essential techniques such as shot composition, camera movement, and scene structuring.

The third day built on the foundational knowledge gained earlier, with a second cohort of journalism participants joining the program to develop there storytelling skills. Sessions continued to strengthen advanced storytelling techniques, journalistic ethics, and real-world reporting practices.

The Basic filmmaking workshop became increasingly practical, with participants gaining greater confidence in camera handling and developing a deeper understanding of production workflows and on-set processes.

Another key highlight from the past two days was the introduction of the Canon Academy Video online learning platform, providing participants with access to continuous, self-paced learning all about film, which will help students go beyond the physical training sessions and gain a deeper perspective on the film industry.

The final day of the program focused on editing fundamentals and post-production techniques key skills required to transform raw footage into compelling visual stories in the Basic Filmmaking workshop.

Participants engaged in a final practical assignment, applying everything they had learned across storytelling, filming, and editing to produce short visual projects. This hands-on exercise showcased their growth and creative progression throughout the program.
