CANON MIRAISHA X SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE SOUTH AFRICA: EXPANDING CREATIVE PATHWAYS ACROSS AFRICA

Canon Miraisha’s collaboration with SOS Children’s Village has been a pan-African journey, beginning in Morocco, then extending to Senegal, and now reaching South Africa. Each partnership has been designed to empower youth and equip community staff with practical creative skills, fostering storytelling, self-expression, and professional pathways in photography. The latest workshop, held in Cape Town, builds on the successes of previous collaborations while introducing new opportunities for both young people and SOS staff members.

The first phase, for SOS staff, covered beginner photography techniques for social media content creation, equipment guidance for documenting community stories, and hands-on shooting exercises. The second phase, for youth participants, introduced photography fundamentals, creative storytelling, framing, and career pathways in the imaging industry. Sessions included practical exercises in composition, lighting, subject interaction, and an industry-focused career talk covering freelancing, gear investment, and professional expectations.

Many youth participants had never handled a camera before, requiring extra guidance, yet engagement remained high throughout the hands-on sessions. Participants gained practical skills, confidence in visual storytelling, and an appreciation for photography as a potential career path. SOS staff left equipped to create professional content for social media and internal documentation. Requests for follow-up mentorship and additional workshops reflected the strong interest in continued learning.

From 29 October to 5 November 2025, Canon Miraisha, in partnership with SOS Children’s Village South Africa, delivered a two-phase photography training programme at the SOS Children’s Village in Cape Town. A total of 21 participants took part, including six SOS staff members and fifteen youth aged 18 and above. The programme was designed to strengthen the organisation’s content creation capabilities while introducing youth to photography as a potential career path.

The workshops were facilitated by Woody, a Canon trainer, and Roger Machin, Product Marketing Manager at Canon South Africa. Woody focused on creative techniques and mentorship for youth, while Roger brought technical expertise and product knowledge, ensuring a balance of inspiration and instruction throughout the sessions.

Looking ahead, Canon Miraisha and SOS Children’s Village plan to introduce pre-workshop online modules for basic camera operations, portfolio review sessions for personalised feedback, and explore mentorship or internship opportunities for youth participants. These steps aim to ensure sustained learning and provide clear pathways from training to practical experience.
