Canon Miraisha and Youth Content Collective Inspire Emerging Creatives in Alexandra, South Africa
Twenty emerging creatives arrived eager to deepen their understanding of visual storytelling. They were guided by two facilitators whose strengths complemented each other in a way that made the day feel both practical and inspiring. Portrait photographer, youth mentor and Canon Trainer, Mancoba Msibi, led the creative direction and human-centred aspects of the workshop, while Canon South Africa’s Product Marketing Manager, Roger Machin, shared technical knowledge and demonstrated how to get the best out of Canon equipment.
The day opened with introductions and a simple icebreaker. Participants spoke about their creative ambitions and the challenges they navigate as young storytellers. This conversation quickly built a sense of connection, making it clear that the workshop would be a shared experience rather than a one-way lesson.
The first technical session focused on the fundamentals of portrait photography. Mancoba demonstrated how to work with both natural and artificial light and showed the group how to interact with subjects in a way that feels natural. A few volunteers stepped forward, allowing everyone to see how small adjustments in posture, light, and communication can shape the final image.
From here, the workshop expanded into lifestyle photography and storytelling. Mancoba explained framing, composition, and the art of capturing unscripted moments. Participants then moved into small groups to practice. As they experimented with angles and shadows, you could sense the excitement of discovery. Every frame taken was part of a story unfolding in real time.
Roger continued the learning journey with a session on post-production and editing. He introduced Canon’s editing tools and demonstrated basic retouching, colour grading, and exporting techniques for social media. This part of the workshop gave participants a clearer understanding of how to bring their ideas to completion, ensuring that the story in their minds is the story that appears on screen.
In the final session, the conversation shifted toward career paths and industry insight. Through an open Q&A, Mancoba and Roger shared their experiences, the realities of the creative industry, and the habits that help emerging photographers grow. Their openness offered participants both information and encouragement to keep moving forward.
Throughout the day, practical shooting sessions allowed everyone to test their skills immediately. Each image reflected growing confidence as participants combined technique with creativity. It was clear that the guidance offered by Mancoba and Roger had made a tangible difference.
The collaboration between Canon Miraisha and YCC underscored a shared mission to empower young creatives with the skills and mentorship they need to build meaningful careers. The workshop showed that photography is more than technical knowledge; it is a way of shaping perspectives, telling stories, and giving voice to communities.
This one-day experience stands as a reflection of the Miraisha vision to inspire, educate, and nurture emerging talent across Africa. For many of the participants, it was not just a workshop. It was a step toward unlocking their creative potential and joining a growing network of visual storytellers shaping the continent’s narrative.
