WORLD UNSEEN

Every Single Life Counts

The image before you captures the striking portrait of a solitary giraffe, standing tall against the backdrop of Nairobi's sprawling cityscape. This lone giraffe is positioned deliberately to appear even taller than the surrounding buildings, standing as a powerful symbol. It underscores a vital message: every single life—no matter how small or seemingly insignificant—is far more valuable than any urban development or material progress.

I took this photograph at a pivotal moment, shortly after rumors began circulating about the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) through the Nairobi National Park. In that moment, I realized how critical it was to raise awareness about the uniqueness of this rare and irreplaceable park. The fate of Nairobi National Park—and the wildlife it protects—was at a crossroads, and I knew that the only way to truly protect it was to ensure that people fell in love with it.

Nairobi National Park is a treasure, a living testament to the possibility of coexistence between man and nature. It is the only national park located within the boundaries of a capital city anywhere in the world. A mere stone’s throw from the bustling streets of Nairobi, it offers a serene sanctuary for an astonishing array of wildlife—lions, giraffes, zebras, and countless other species. In many ways, it is the very heart of the city, a symbol of hope that humanity and the wild can exist side by side, not in opposition.

For me, Nairobi National Park isn’t just a beautiful green space; it is a lifeline—a sanctuary for wildlife, a symbol of Kenya’s deep connection to nature, and a beacon of hope for conservation efforts globally. In my eyes, it is the true Safari Capital of the world, where one can witness the delicate balance between human progress and the preservation of nature.

As the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi holds a special place in the heart of every Kenyan. The Nairobi National Park is not just a local treasure; it is a part of our national heritage. It is our responsibility to protect it, not just for us, but for the countless generations that will come after us. This park is a living legacy, and ensuring its preservation has become one of my life’s most important missions.

Listen to

I believe that if enough people recognize the value of this park—not just as a tourist destination, but as a critical ecosystem that supports life, culture, and biodiversity—then we can safeguard its future. This is not just a fight for the protection of a park; it’s a fight for the preservation of life itself. For every giraffe, every lion, every zebra that calls this place home, every single life truly counts.
