Across the Continent, Into Communities: Canon Miraisha Comes to SOS Children's Villages Senegal

The collaboration has run from Morocco to South Africa. In March 2026, it reached Senegal. Over six days in Dakar, Canon Miraisha delivered two consecutive workshops at SOS Children's Villages Senegal, one for staff and educators, one for the young people in their communities. Together, they trained thirty participants and continued building what is now a genuine pan-African creative network of young creatives.

The Dakar leg ran in two distinct phases. From 23 to 25 March 2026, Canon delivered a staff and educator workshop, giving SOS Children's Villages Senegal's own team the photography and creative skills they need to document their work, tell their organization’s story, and continue supporting the young creatives in their care.

From 26 to 28 March, the focus shifted to the youth. Thirty young participants from SOS Children's Villages Senegal took part in a three-day photography workshop, moving through foundational theory and hands-on practical shooting. The programme was facilitated by Aldi Diasse, a Canon Trainer and creative based in Senegal, whose local presence ensured the learning connected with the cultural and visual environment participants know.

Running the staff workshop first was not incidental. When the people who support young creatives are equipped with the same skills, the learning environment after the programme ends looks fundamentally different. The educators become enablers, not just observers.

The Senegal workshop is part of a series, not a standalone event. Canon Miraisha's partnership with SOS Children's Villages has now moved across Morocco, South Africa, and Senegal, with each leg building on the last and deepening a collaboration that is explicitly designed around pan-African reach.

The logic is straightforward. SOS Children’s Villages operates across the continent, building long-term, trusted relationships with children and young people who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it, while also supporting vulnerable families to stay together. This creates a stable community infrastructure rooted in care, continuity, and opportunity, and a shared belief that creative education changes outcomes. Canon Miraisha brings the trainers, the curriculum, and the equipment.

Together, the two organizations can reach young people in communities that formal creative education rarely serves. This is what a genuine pan-African creative partnership looks like: not a single activation in one city, but a sustained, rolling commitment that accumulates into something a young person in Dakar or Casablanca or Johannesburg can actually feel.

Thirty young people in Senegal left the workshop with a practical foundation in photography: Exposure Triangle, Composition Notion and hands-on practical shooting. Those are transferable skills that can be applied to content creation, journalism, event photography, and the growing number of creative roles across African markets that require people who can tell stories visually.

Their educators left with the same skills, which means the learning doesn’t stop when the Canon trainers leave. And Canon Miraisha left with another chapter in a partnership that is growing in scope and in depth with every market it enters.

The Senegal leg also demonstrated something important about the Miraisha model itself: that it scales. The combination of a locally based trainer, a partner organization with deep community roots, and a curriculum built around practical creative education works regardless of market. Casablanca and Dakar are different cities with different contexts. The outcome, young people with new creative skills and a connection to the Canon community, looks the same.
